Part 1 - Morning CPD Program          9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Join B.C. Provincial Court Judge Steven Merrick and B.C. lawyer Suzette Narbonne for an interactive presentation on British Columbia’s experiment with designated First Nations courts, the successes and challenges they have faced and how the courts could work in other jurisdictions, including Manitoba.

Part 2 - Afternoon CPD Program          1:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Session 1: For the Sake of the Children….For Lawyers

Has a client ever asked you any of these questions?

  • My kids don’t want to go for their weekend visit, what should I do?
  • He cancelled his scheduled visit with the kids, what should I tell them?
  • The kids are blaming me for the separation, but she was the one who cheated, can I tell them the truth?
  • He wants to come to gymnastics but it’s my day with the kids, can I stop him?
  • She wants to bring her boyfriend to our son's hockey game, is that allowed?

You want to be helpful to your client but do you know how you should respond? This program will provide you with information given to parents who attend For the Sake of the Children program offered to parents by Family Conciliation, but in a condensed format and tailored to focus on the information most relevant to lawyers.

  • Children’s Developmental Issues
  • Children’s Reactions
  • Emotional Separation – the grieving process – both from a parent’s and a child’s perspective – there is a difference!
  • Services offered by Family Conciliation
  • Economic Separation – both from a parent’s and a child’s perspective
  • Children’s Needs for Boundaries
  • The Cost of Conflict / The Benefits of Cooperation
  • Ongoing Parenting and Communication
  • Ongoing Relationships with Extended Families
  • New Partners

Session 2: You Are Not Alone: The Lawyer’s Guide to Dealing with Anxiety

We have all heard about lawyers increased experiences of depression and anxiety.  We also know that we are all better at what we do when we are healthy and feeling well.  So, as suggested by the Bell campaign….”Let’s talk”.

This program has been tailored specifically for lawyers and will give you some basic information on what anxiety is and how it reveals itself.  More importantly, you will learn about strategies to manage anxiety and what resources are available to help yourself and your colleagues. 

Presenter:  Dr. Shelley Rhyno, Registered Clinical Psychologist

Members: This program may be reported for up to 3.5 hours of eligible CPD activity, including 1 hour of EPPM.



Full Day Rates:
Lawyer - $175.00 plus GST
Student - $87.50 plus GST ~ 50% Student Discount

Half Day Rates (Morning or Afternoon):
Lawyer - $100.00 plus GST
Student - $50.00 plus GST ~ 50% Student Discount
